Overall, this season is better written than seasons two through four, with a tighter focus and a more interconnected storyline, as well as more consistent expansion and adaptation of Biblical scenes. However, it is told in a worse way, with atrocious pacing, a grim tone, and a few weird adaptation choices.

Rhythm of War is the first book in The Stormlight Archive that I criticized many things that just seemed weird or off. It still has high highs, though. And, because of it, I became hooked on the Cosmere and the cosmic war that The Stormlight Archive is leading to. So, for Sanderson, mission accomplished.

While I don’t think his plotting or his characters are perfect, Oathbringer brings what Brandon Sanderson does best: stunning climaxes, a deeply layered world, twists baked into the worldbuilding, and characters overcoming unbelievable flaws and pasts.
